Ideas and Solutions for Sustainable Fashion

Consumers and businesses must adopt more sustainable practices to mitigate the impacts of fashion waste on the environment. Here are several ideas and solutions for sustainable fashion and to save our mother nature.
  • Repair & up-cycle: Promoting up-cycling of old clothes, footwear, and accessories into stylish new items reduces waste and encourages creativity. Circular models extend the life of fashion items through durable design, repair services, and recycling, with some brands exploring leasing for reuse. Vdesi India's Live Embellish Counter supports this by offering up-cycling services to transform your items into fashionable statement pieces.
  • Hosting thrift/barter fashion events: Taking second clothing to a ubiquitous level. We can make a difference only when we popularize progressive practices so we make a sizable difference. Whether brands make thrifting a part of their business or individuals host parties and get-together events to exchange fashion accompanied by fun conversations and tasty bites.
  • Eco-Friendly Materials: Using organic, recycled, or biodegradable materials reduces the environmental footprint of clothing. Organic cotton, for example, is grown without harmful chemicals, thus helping maintain soil health, conserve water, and ensure the health of people working in the fields. Materials like wood pulp, hemp, and recycled polyester are also gaining popularity.
  • Up-cycle & DIY events: Fun Sunday get-together events hosted by the Live Embellish Counter, where people bond over coffee & breakfast, to learn the art of up-cycling fashion products. With just some training and learning to execute ideas, some amazing masterpieces originate at these events, when creative minds come together.
  • Ethical Production Practices: Brands can adopt fair trade practices to ensure workers are paid fair wages and work in safe conditions across their supply chains. Transparency about where and how clothing is made also helps consumers make more informed choices.
  • Technology and Innovation: Technological innovations, more spending on research & development to introduce more models of reuse and recycling into manufacturing processes. For example, digital printing reduces dye and water waste, using blockchain technology that can help track and verify sustainable practices throughout the supply chain, aiming to reduce the massive waste and pollution caused by the traditional fashion industry. Raw material innovations like agricultural and bast waste are turned into textile-grade fibres & yarns by an Indian company Canvaloop. Vdesi India’s Flip bag is a product innovation in the structure of handbags, to minimize material usage & enable easy replacement of damaged parts of the bag.
  • Slow Fashion: This movement encourages both designers and consumers to shift towards timeless fashion—high-quality, sustainable items produced in smaller batches. Slow fashion advocates creating durable all-season designs that transcend seasonal trends creating durable, all-season designs so consumers buy less, choose well, and make clothing last longer in their wardrobe, which contrasts sharply with the fast fashion model.
  • Educating the consumer: Education plays a crucial role in creating any type of change in society. Consumers can impact the industry by making informed choices, such as supporting sustainable brands, choosing quality over quantity, and advocating for industry-wide change toward more sustainable practices.
  • Sharing and rental Culture: We can inculcate a sharing fashion culture, like sharing clothes, accessories, bags, shoes, etc among our circles. This would help build a community that believes in and understands the cause. Rental fashion culture also is now becoming popular, which was a taboo until a few years back.
  • Reuse until dead: When we see our old torn t-shirt as a kitchen mop, we laugh at that saying to our mum - “kitni kanjoosi” but that’s the best practiced used case which Indian mums have been doing for years. We need to bring back the culture of reuse to the fullest. Reuse until the piece seems of no use and discard in the appropriate way possible.

    Vdesi’s opinion

We strongly feel the cause for the need for sustainable fashion. But realistically, we feel there cannot be any sudden shift in this. Fashion designers and brands have to make efforts and steps to create fashion products, technology & techniques which can eventually pivot towards a major shift.

Whether we like it or not, fast fashion is here to stay, Hence instead of fighting it, we would rather work towards creating products that can balance fast fashion and sustainability.
One of the major drawbacks of sustainable brands or techniques of production of these products is that they are generally more expensive or not popularly available and accessible or the designs are too basic. It is unfair to expect consumers to take the larger steps because they are lured to consume what’s in trend, cheaply, and easily available.

Vdesi’s Contribution: We have formulated 2 projects as our contribution towards a step to balance fast fashion and sustainability. This is our gift to our planet and we promise to work continuously towards more creative ideas to help reduce the carbon footprint.
